How To Get Married In Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Marriage is one of the features that I personally enjoy the most because it shows just how realistic this game can be.

Unfortunately, it is also one of those features that many players ignore during their first Bannerlord campaign.

At first glance, it doesn't seem particularly important. You're busy fighting battles, earning denars, building your clan, and trying not to get captured by bandits every twenty minutes.

Then a few years pass in-game, and suddenly you realize that having a spouse can be far more valuable than you initially thought.

Marriage isn't just a role-playing feature. It can strengthen your clan, provide powerful companions, and eventually secure your family's future through heirs. Just like real life, I guess.😁

Why Marriage Matters

A lot of players see marriage as something they can deal with later, and technically, that's true.

The problem is that Bannerlord campaigns can last a very long time, and the earlier you start building your family, the more benefits you'll gain from it.

A good spouse can become a governor, lead armies, manage settlements, or simply serve as an extremely capable companion. Some potential spouses have skills that rival many of the companions you'll find throughout Calradia.

In other words, marriage is not just about producing heirs. It's also an opportunity to strengthen your clan immediately.

Finding A Potential Spouse

The first step is locating an eligible noble.

Fortunately, Bannerlord makes this fairly easy.

You can open the encyclopedia and browse through noble clans across Calradia. Every character page contains useful information, including family members, clan affiliation, and their last known location.

This saves a tremendous amount of time compared to randomly searching settlements and hoping to stumble across the person you're looking for.

Once you've found somebody who interests you, the real challenge begins.

Actually convincing them to marry you.

The Courtship Process

Unlike many RPGs, Bannerlord doesn't allow you to pay a fee and instantly get married.

You'll need to speak directly with the noble you wish to marry and express your interest.

From there, you'll usually face a series of dialogue checks.

Success depends largely on your social skills, traits and a bit of luck. Failing a conversation isn't necessarily the end of the world, but repeated failures can quickly close the door on a potential marriage.

Because of this, many players prefer to save before important conversations.

Whether you choose to do that is entirely up to you.

Negotiating With The Family

Even after completing the courtship dialogue, you're not quite finished.

Marriage in Bannerlord is ultimately a political arrangement between noble families.

That means you'll usually need to negotiate with the clan leader before the marriage can take place.

Depending on your wealth, reputation, and social status, this can involve a substantial payment. Some clans are willing to accept reasonable offers, while others can be surprisingly expensive.

Fortunately, by the time most players begin considering marriage, they have usually accumulated enough denars to cover the cost.

Choosing The Right Spouse

This is where many players make decisions based purely on appearance.

While there's nothing wrong with that, skills matter far more in the long run.

Some spouses have excellent stewardship, making them strong governors. Others excel in combat and can become formidable battlefield commanders. A few possess impressive social or intelligence skills that provide value throughout an entire campaign.

Before making a decision, it's worth spending a few minutes looking through their attributes and skill levels.

The strongest marriage choice isn't always the most obvious one.

What Happens After Marriage?

Once married, your spouse officially joins your clan.

From that point forward, they function much like a high-quality companion.

You can assign them to govern settlements, lead parties, accompany your army, or simply remain within your clan as a valuable member.

Perhaps more importantly, marriage allows your family to grow.

Children eventually become playable clan members, giving your dynasty long-term stability and ensuring your campaign can continue for generations.

For players pursuing kingdom building, this becomes increasingly important as the years pass.

Is Marriage Worth It?

For most campaigns, absolutely.

The investment is relatively small compared to the benefits you receive over time. A capable spouse can contribute to your clan for decades, while children provide long-term security that no amount of money can buy.

Even players who aren't interested in roleplaying usually find that marriage becomes useful once they begin managing larger territories and armies.

It's one of those systems that feels optional at first but becomes increasingly valuable the deeper your campaign goes.

Final Thoughts

Getting married in Bannerlord is about far more than simply starting a family.

It's an opportunity to strengthen your clan, gain access to talented nobles, and prepare for the long term future of your campaign.

Whether you're building a kingdom, leading armies across Calradia, or simply trying to create a lasting dynasty, choosing the right spouse can have a bigger impact than many players expect.

And unlike many decisions in Bannerlord, this is one investment that tends to pay off for the rest of the game.
