How To Increase Your Clan Tier In Mount And Blade II: Bannerlord

When I first started playing Bannerlord, I didn't pay much attention to clan tier at all. I was far more interested in recruiting troops, winning tournaments, and making enough denars to stop living from battle to battle. Eventually, though, I began to notice that other clans seemed to be progressing much faster than mine. They had larger parties, more companions, and far more influence across Calradia.

It took me a while to realize that the clan tier was the reason behind all of it.

The good news is that increasing your clan tier isn't complicated once you understand what the game is actually rewarding. In most campaigns, you'll be earning progress naturally without even realizing it.

Renown Is What Really Matters

Every clan tier in Bannerlord is tied directly to renown. If your goal is reaching higher tiers, then everything comes back to finding efficient ways of earning more renown.

Once I understood that, I stopped worrying so much about random activities and started focusing on the things that gave the biggest rewards. The nice part is that most of the activities that generate renown are things you'd probably be doing anyway. Winning battles, participating in wars, defeating nobles, and performing well in tournaments all contribute to growing your clan's reputation.

The more famous your character becomes, the faster your clan progresses.

Take On Difficult Battles

Something I learned fairly early is that Bannerlord rewards those who take risks.

Defeating a small group of looters will give you some renown, but defeating an enemy lord with a stronger army can provide significantly more. The game likes seeing you overcome challenges rather than simply farming easy victories.

That doesn't mean throwing yourself into impossible battles, but it does mean looking for opportunities where the odds aren't entirely in your favor.

Some of the biggest renown gains I've had came from battles I almost avoided because they looked too difficult at first glance.

Don't Ignore Tournaments

Even hundreds of hours later, I still enter tournaments whenever I pass through a town hosting one.

Most players focus on the equipment rewards, but the renown is just as valuable, especially during the early stages of a campaign. Winning tournaments consistently can push your clan tier upward surprisingly quickly, and unlike wars, you don't need a powerful army to participate.

In many of my campaigns, tournaments were responsible for a huge portion of my early renown gains.

Wars Accelerate Everything

Once you become a mercenary or vassal, clan progression usually starts moving much faster.

Large battles against enemy nobles provide far better rewards than fighting bandits, and wars create a constant stream of opportunities to gain renown. Whether you're helping allied armies, defeating enemy parties, or participating in sieges, almost every successful military action contributes to your clan's growth.

Whenever I notice my clan tier has jumped significantly, it's usually because I've just finished a long and successful war.

Focus On Important Victories

Not every battle is worth the same amount of renown.

This is why I generally prefer quality over quantity. Spending an hour chasing tiny groups of bandits rarely feels as rewarding as participating in a major battle involving several nobles and hundreds of troops.

The larger and more significant the victory, the better the rewards tend to be. That's especially true later in the game when the renown requirements for new clan tiers start becoming much higher.

Quests Help More Than People Think

I wouldn't rely on quests as my primary source of renown, but they definitely help.

What I like about quests is that many of them fit naturally into things I'm already doing. If I'm travelling between towns, recruiting troops, or hunting bandits anyway, picking up a few quests along the route usually feels worthwhile.

The individual rewards aren't massive, but over the course of an entire campaign, they add up surprisingly quickly.

Why Clan Tier Is So Important

The reason players care so much about clan tier is that the rewards affect almost every aspect of the game.

Higher clan tiers increase party size limits, unlock additional companion slots, allow more clan parties, and generally give you far more flexibility as your campaign progresses.

Individually, these bonuses might not seem game-changing, but together they make a huge difference.

I usually feel the biggest impact around the mid-game, when larger party sizes and extra clan parties start opening up opportunities that simply weren't available before.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, clan tier progression is really just a reflection of how successful your character has become. The more battles you win, the more tournaments you conquer, and the more influence you build across Calradia, the faster your clan grows alongside you.

The best advice I can give is not to obsess over renown itself. Instead, focus on being active.

Fight wars, enter tournaments, take on challenging battles, and keep building your reputation. If you're consistently doing those things, your clan tier will rise naturally, and you'll eventually unlock all the advantages that come with it.
